Case Study: Linoleum with feature panels

Business: Southbank University

Specification: To supply and install two colours of linoleum as per architects plans

Area: Entrance / Reception of a large halls of residence

Substrate: Concrete

Material: Two shades of 2 meter wide sheet linoleum

We were asked to give a price for installing linoleum including panels as per architect’s drawings that were supplied in PDF format. Linoleum was chosen not only because of its hard warring and hygienic properties but also because of its environmental benefits. Linoleum is produced using renewable materials: linseed oil, wood flour, jute rosins, and ecologically responsible pigments.

The PDF file was then entered into our estimating computer program Callidus and the different flooring areas were plotted. Then following our site survey the length of one of the walls that was entered into system to establish the exact size of the areas.

Using the computerized estimating system we minimized the time spent on the site survey and more importantly due to its precise nature we minimized the amount of waste material allowed for which helped us provide a competitive price and ultimately reduce the environmental impact of the installation.

When it came to installing the linoleum we had to uplift the existing flooring, and prepare the substrate with self levelling compound in order to provide a smooth and sound laying surface.

Once the substrate was prepared we plotted out the exact areas where the different floorings would meet using chalk lines. This task was made very far more technical than usual due to the lack of proper architect’s drawings. Following the plotting out of the areas was highly skilled job of cutting in and adhering the linoleum was expertly carried out.

As you can see the final finish was of a very high standard.
