Case Study: Bespoke Bordered Carpet

Business: Property Management Company

Specification: To install thick, luxurious and extremely hardwearing wool carpet with a custom made inlayed border following the perimeter of the stairs and landings. Matching the main body colour of the carpet to that of the neighbouring block of flats

Area: Six landings, one large entrance area, and seven flight of stairs in one of London’s most prestigious residences

Substrate: Stone staircase, Wood and stone landings

Material: Bespoke dyed 70oz/yd² 80/20 wool/nylon pass tufted velvet carpet with an inlayed hand carved border

We had to match the colour of the new carpet to that of the carpet in the neighbouring building and we supplied the client with several woollen colour samples. Once they had selected the correct colour we arranged for the carpet to be produced in pieces large enough to cover the areas without joins. For the entrance area this meant making a piece of carpet 15m x 7.5m.

While the carpet was being manufactured, the areas had to be precisely measured using a datum line. Templates were made of the areas with underlay paper ready for inlaying the border. The measurements for laying out the border have to be accurate as the border is inlayed off site in a workshop.

Once planned out, the yellow border carpet was laid on top of the blue body carpet and a special hand operated cutting machine was used to cut through both the yellow and blue carpet to form the rope shape. The blue rope shape was then removed and replaced with the yellow shape. The border was fixed into place by attaching a backing to the underside of the carpet with latex. The border was completed with a three dimensional hand carved effect leaving the job of installation.

The client and C3 were both thrilled with the dramatic results.
